WAFORA™ FlexScraper Set — Silicone Spatulas for Baking & Mixing

Sticky dough is not automatically a failed dough. Some bread styles are intentionally wet, while others should become more manageable as flour hydrates and structure develops. Before adding flour, compare the dough with the recipe's intended consistency and check that the quantities were measured correctly.

Check what kind of dough you are making

A high-hydration loaf will not handle like a firm bagel dough. Whole-grain and alternative flours absorb differently, and enriched doughs have their own mixing sequence. A recipe written for one flour type may need more than a casual one-for-one swap.

If you accidentally doubled the liquid or omitted a major ingredient, a rest will not correct the formula. Recalculate deliberately or restart rather than adding flour without a plan until something looks familiar.

Give hydration and mixing a chance

Follow any rest the recipe specifies before kneading or folding. During a suitable rest, flour absorbs water, which may improve handling. Do not invent long rests or warm holding periods for every dough; ingredients, fermentation and room temperature all matter.

Work according to the method. Some doughs develop through stretches and folds instead of heavy kneading on a flour-covered counter. Mixer speed and capacity limits still apply even if you want the dough to become smooth faster.

Control contact rather than burying it in flour

  • Use a suitable dough scraper to move dough without repeatedly grabbing it.
  • Use lightly dampened or lightly oiled hands only where the recipe permits.
  • Keep the work surface clear so you can lift and fold cleanly.
  • If bench flour is appropriate, add a light dusting and reassess.

A flexible spatula from the WAFORA™ FlexScraper Set can gather a mixture from a bowl. It is not necessarily a rigid bench scraper; choose equipment suited to the stage.

Add flour only after identifying the need

If the recipe expects firmer dough and measurements are sound, add flour in small, measured increments while checking the effect. Keep a note so you can adjust more accurately next time. A large unmeasured addition changes hydration and can produce a dry, heavy loaf.

Know the limits of a texture fix

Warm, overfermented or structurally weak dough may feel slack for reasons beyond excess water. More flour is not a universal repair. Use the recipe's fermentation cues as well as touch, and avoid tasting raw dough. For measuring the original formula, see using a kitchen scale.
